This message contains information about the Language Learning Opportunities Pilot that Maplehurst Middle School has been part of since the fall of 2021.
Maplehurst Middle School is excited to continue exploring and creating French Second Language teaching and learning practices in innovative ways by continuing our Language Learning Opportunities Pilot in collaboration with the Department of Education and Early Childhood.
Innovation opportunities like this align with our Husky values of Excellence and Diversity in Wellness, Community, and Learning. We want all Huskies to learn at high levels and that includes learning French.
Our efforts align with the recommendations of the 2021 Review of the Official Languages Act where 24 recommendations on second language learning were identified. You can read the report by clicking here .
We are one of the schools deeply engaged in recommendation 4 as a pilot site as we contribute to the innovation required to support recommendation 18 specifically.
We will work to build excellence in language learning by providing opportunities to develop students’ oral, reading and writing skills for all Huskies over their three years at Maplehurst. We will offer a variety of meaningful and authentic activities to foster a sense of community around the culture of language. The teams of teachers will engage the Huskies in learning French as they collaborate to assess each child’s language level and plan to meet their learning needs. We are adding opportunities for all students to learn French and students may be grouped and regrouped at times. The opportunities will allow for stretch learning for all. In the end, our goal is to develop more skills and capacity in French. The Huskies will still belong to a program of language instruction (Immersion/English) and receive the provincial curriculum.
We are a unique learning community where the majority of our staff speak French and over a third of our student population have joined us from other parts of the world and often speak more than one language. We are striving to create a culture of language learning that celebrates our diversity and that builds on the strengths we are so fortunate to have at Maplehurst.
We look forward to sharing our successes and challenges as we work to improve our practices and the level of French in our halls.
Thank you for your continued support,
Miss Nowlan
Principal
